Technology Blog #1: Developing a Connected Learning Model

Chapter 2 of The Connected Educator: Learning and Leading in a Digital Age explores the differences between Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), Personal Learning Networks (PLNs), and Communities of Practice (CoPs). Professional Learning Communities are groups of professionals who seek to gain more skills and improve themselves through collaboration. Personal Learning Networks are more personal and allow others to learn online—for example, through social media, blogs, and wikis. Communities of Practice focus on gaining more knowledge and improving skills by meeting online and offline to share their passions or goals. However, it also highlights how technology is the reason we can now connect so easily and learn together, even with people across the world.

In Chapter 2, the author gives examples of teachers utilizing PLCs, PLNs, and CoPs to grow and improve with others. For instance, one teacher used RSS feeds and Twitter to make connections, which helped her feel more hopeful about becoming a better teacher. By engaging with these platforms, she was exposed to new ideas and perspectives she hadn’t anticipated. These connections helped me understand the power of these communities and how they can support my career path in graphic design. In this field, it’s essential to use social media and other platforms to stay up to date on current design trends and gather inspiration. Another teacher shared how participating in PLCs allowed them to collaborate with others to solve challenges in their classrooms. Similarly, as a designer, I can collaborate with other professionals to share feedback and improve my work.

Overall, technology is a big part of our lives now, making it easier to navigate, understand, improve, and better ourselves. In my graphic design career path, I can see how valuable these learning communities can be. Whether it is using them to stay up to date, collaborate with other designers, or connect with people who share the same passions, these communities are essential for growth.
